John Taylor

John Taylor (1942–2015) was a British jazz pianist, composer, and educator, celebrated for his sophisticated style and rhythmic innovation. A self-taught musician, he emerged in the 1960s free jazz scene before gaining wider recognition in the 1970s as an accompanist and bandleader. He was a founding member of the influential trio Azimuth. His work, often associated with ECM Records, showcased a blend of classical and jazz influences, expanding harmonic possibilities in modern jazz. John Taylor collaborated with many influential jazz musicians throughout his career, often for decades, highlighting his ability to adapt and innovate across different jazz styles. Leading artists he collaborated with included: Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, John Surman, Jan Garbarek, Lee Konitz, Gil Evans, Charlie Mariano, Tony Coe, Steve Argüelles, Peter Erskine, Palle Danielsson, Ralph Towner and Maria Pia De Vito. Taylor also played a vital role in jazz education, serving as a professor at the Cologne College of Music and the University of York. He passed away in 2015 after suffering a heart attack while performing at a jazz festival in France.
