Flute

Brian Dunning (1951–2022) was an Irish jazz flautist who studied in Berkeley and was very active on the Irish scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He performed regularly with guitarist Louis Stewart as well as working with other younger emerging musicians like drummer Stephen Keogh, and a very young Michael Buckley (now a primarily saxophonist but who started on flute as a child). Though Brian came relatively late to flute playing - he was working as an electrician when he began lessons– he took to the instrument in a way that was almost alchemical. Working with Louis Stewart they discovered a common ground, a shared humour and curiosity, an intimate form of communication. In addition to jazz and some classical orchestral work, Brian was interested in traditional and fusion, and moved to the US in the 80s, initially working in traditional music in New York, but later moving to Portland, Oregon, where he established himself as not just a jazz player, but one who explored traditional Irish music through a contemporary lens. His work with NightNoise, a band formed with the Ó Dómhnaill siblings Micheál and Tríona, and fiddle player Billy Oksay, later Johnny Cunningham, allowed for an authentic connection with tunes and songs but also space for new compositions. Touring and recording widely with both this band, and Puck Fair with Tommy Hayes, consolidated Brian’s immediately identifiable sound. In addition to bebop and other jazz influences he integrated folk and traditional ornamentation and phrasing normally found in players like Matt Molloy. In compiling the re-issue of ALONE TOGETHER, the plaudits for Brian’s personality and playing have been extraordinary and widespread.
